Said Blitz, "Institutional collections of digital images are increasing rapidly. Manually creating subject access to those images is an expensive, labor intensive process. Project CLiMB (Computational Linguistics in Metadata Building), an interdisciplinary project at Columbia University, is exploring the potential of automatic techniques to help alleviate this cataloging bottleneck. CLiMB is employing computational linguistic tools to extract descriptive metadata terms and phrases from existing scholarly literature associated with image collections. Funding for the project is from the Mellon Foundation."
