Description

As digital video is increasingly used as primary content in educational and research websites, site creators face various challenges in distributing this dynamic and non-textual content. In this forum, we will look at three different projects at Cornell that are centered around video clips, and explore the different ways in which these collections are organized, accessed, and utilized.

Dominic Goddall will present Cornell Transnational Learning (CTL), a project of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences that uses video to connect Cornell's faculty and curriculum to students in South Africa, Thailand, India, and the Philippines. In addition to delivering lecture footage to the students, CTL also arranges and hosts videoconferences between students and faculty on different continents. CTL uses RealMedia and Windows Media.

Jon Corson-Rikert and John Cline will present E-Clips, a project of professor Deborah Streeter (Applied Economics and Management) involving ongoing active collaboration with the Library for database and web site design and hosting. E-Clips contains thousands of video clips of interviews with entrepreneurs, acting as a "virtual panel of experts" for educational use. Instructors can select clips in MPEG-1 or WMV format to be inserted into presentations for use in the classroom. The site has active users at over 800 universities in the U.S. and internationally.

Danielle Mericle will present Mller-Kluge, a collection of 22 films of the renowned German playwright Heiner Mller by filmmaker Alexander Kluge. With support from a faculty grant for digital library collections, awarded to professor David Bathrick (German Studies and Drama), the films have been enhanced with annotations, citations, and subtitles in German and English, and are delivered using Flash.
